Description

The Welsh Cancer Intelligence & Surveillance Unit (WCISU) is the National Cancer Registry for Wales and its primary role is to record, store and report on all incidence of cancer for the resident population of Wales wherever they are treated. Cancer registration in Wales began almost five decades ago and today’s electronic database which holds records going back to 1972 contains in the region of 686,000 records.

The aims of the WCISU are as follows:

  • Collect, analyse and store accurate, timely and comprehensive data on cancer.
  • Uphold patient confidentiality.
  • Providing information on cancer incidence, survival and mortality over time.
  • Monitoring trends in cancer.
  • Contributing to important research projects and programmes both throughout the UK and Internationally.
  • Provide appropriate information on cancer for ad hoc queries.
  • Publish scientific reports and papers relating to cancer
  • Facilitate planning of cancer services for prevention, diagnosis, cure and care.
  • Review activities and programmes of the Registry regularly to ensure the provision of high quality data on cancer.
